    Default The Hythe Pier Railway

Posted on behalf of David Mead

The Hythe Pier Railway - it is rather unique - opened in 1881, 2100 feet in length and as far as I am aware is the oldest surviving pier railway which operates daily as a public transport service! The railway, 110 Volts connects the village of Hythe to the end of the pier where a ferry service operates to Southampton, where a free bus service conects with Southampton Rail Station. Rail enthusiasts may ride the train without having to buy ferry tickets, just a pier toll, providing there is space available. For ship fans, its an ideal place to view passenger and freight ships passing.

I'm sorry, this is Hythe near Colchester, Wivenhoe, Arlesford, Great Bentley, Weeley and Thorpe Le Soken we are talking isn't it?

    Default Hythe, Hants.

In reply, I confirm the pier railway is HYTHE, Hampshire. Hythe is a small town on the west side of Southampton Water and did have a passenger train station on the Totton, Hythe and Fawley light railway line, which was opened in July 1925 and it still open today for freight. The Hythe Pier Railway is an independent line and was built on the pier in order to connect residents and visitors to and from the City of Southampton by means of a foot ferry service. The railway and ferry are still operating today and is a great way of viewing any ocean cruise liners and shipping movements. I hope this has cleared any confusion - I m happy to answer any questions.

    Default Holybourne Tanks

Yes - the Holybourne Tank Train conveys oil to Fawley Refinery and travels on the Totton-Hythe-Fawley branch line. I am not sure of the days run and times though.
