    Default Nicknames

    I was thinking back to my days as a youngster, trainspotting (as we liked to call it then) and remembering some of the nicknames we had for the different classes of engines, as follows,

    24 = skinheads ( we didnt get 31's in Wrexham)
    25 = baby sulzer
    40 = Ingies
    DMU's = Bogfarts

    Maybe, between us all, we could come up with a very comprehensive list of commonly used nicknames over the previous however many years.
    It could be interesting to see how they change from area to area as well,
    We had never heard of gronks, and a 24 to us was a skinhead, where as to others a 31 is a skinhead

    Default Nick Names.

    In steam days, we used to call the unrebuilt Bulleid's West Country and Battle of Britain 4-6-2 's - spam cans! ( It was because of the casing surrounding the boiler). The A4's were known as "streaks" - also due to their tapered front ends and streamline casing.

    450 Doodlebug/Granville
    444 Arkwright
    165/166 Thames Toilets
    141-144 Pacers/Skippers
    Official names given to these DMUs by British Rail. Skipper was only ever used in Cornwall.
    Bouncy Castle
    Pacers have only 4 wheels on each carriage which on any below par track gives a very bouncy ride especially when the suspension and dampers start to wear.

    Jungle Bus
    When it's bad it feels like you are riding down a jungle track in some doddery old bus rather than being on a train on a flat railway line.

    158 Coffin Express
    Shape of the front end and also refers to no opening windows in the passenger compartment
    Scud

    Default Pacer Units

    When I was travelling ona Pacer between Leeds and Morecambe, the locals told me they refer them as " Nodding Donkeys " In a way, it was apt, as the ride was very rock and roll in them especially at speed!
