Anniversary of Closure of Winchester to Alton line ( Mid-Hants Railway).

May I bring reader's attention to an event on The Mid-Hants Railway on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd February 2008?

The Mid-Hants Railway ( Watercress Line ) is to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the railway closing, which took place on 4th February 1973. A steam & diesel service will feature a DMMU heritage diesel train and a Hampshire diesel unit (which used to run on the line before the railway closure) will now run as a NON passenger service or static train during this event. During the weekend you can see a mixture of classic cars from the 1960's and 70's on static display at Ropley and Alresford stations such as Triumphs, Rovers and more. Please also if you can, visit the historical display about the closure of the line in the Old Goods Shed at Alresford station, featuring newspaper articles and images from the time.

Standard Fares will apply for the weekend - Adults £12.00, Child under 16 £6.00 and Family ( 2A and 2C ) £30.00.

If there are any readers who are working members of the following railways - Severn Valley, Bluebell, Swanage, Isle of Wight, GWSR and Kent & East Sussex, they will be allowed to travel free of charge on production of their ID cards. Likewise, working volunteers of other preserved railways will be charged £6.00. There are also quarter fares for National Rail employees and famililies who hold comapny ID cards.

Trains depart Alresford at 11.00, 11.43, 13.00, 13.43, 15.00 and single only at 15.43.

Trains depart Alton at 10.50, 11.55, 12.50, 13.55, 14.50 and single only at

Further to my posting, the Hampshire DEMU will operate on 2nd and 3rd February 2008 as per :-
Alresford to Medstead & Four Marks at 12.08 and 14.10. However, these will be demonstration / photographic trips only and will not carry passengers. Sorry, I have not found out the reason.

Lucky you James - I see you get to Alton at 13.00 and leave at 15.55, so there will be time for one round trip to Alresford and back. The times of the EDL tour are published on the Mid-Hants web-site.

Indeed i did enjoy the trip the locos 73209 73206 Performed very well, was a good day out.
