Default EMT to cut jobs but not services

162 job losses at rail operator

ONE of Sheffield's main rail operators today announced plans to shed 162 jobs after the company said it had been hit by the recession.
East Midlands Trains, which manages Sheffield and Chesterfield stations and runs main line services between Sheffield and London, has started consultation with staff about job losses.

But the RMT union, which represents staff, said it would fight ADVERTISEMENT the changes - and revealed its 700 members who work for the company may take industrial action.

Stagecoach, the transport giant which owns East Midlands Trains, made pre-tax profits of £100.7 million in the first half of the 2008-9 financial year - up from £80.4 million in the first half of 2007-8.

Now Network Rail are talking about cuts, however in some respects what NR are doing makes sense.

They are creating a HQ at Milton Keynes for the whole country with more staff being flexible in the jobs and resources can be concentrated as and where needed.
