Vienna’s public transport agency has cancelled an order for more than 100 trams after one caught fire last week.
Wiener Linien manager Michael Lichtenegger said today (Fri) the company decided to call off an order for 104 so-called ULF trams – the newer models already operating in the city – produced by Siemens.
Lichtenegger said the company’s ULF trams already in service will be given a security check to avoid similar fires in the future.
Police are investigating after a line 67 tram was gutted by fire in Vienna-Favoriten last Sunday. No one was injured in the incident after its driver managed to evacuate all passengers.
Wiener Linien, who were criticised for hiking prices earlier this year, said the blaze was caused when a noise insulation cover caught fire in the back of the tram.
Have to say that I thought Siemiens vehicles were rather good.
